Sprinkle a pinch of dried catnip on the floor and a susceptible cat transforms. It sniffs, licks, and chews the leaves, rubs its cheeks and chin through them, rolls onto its back, and wriggles in apparent bliss — sometimes drooling, sometimes leaping and batting at nothing. Ten minutes later the show is over and the cat wanders off as if nothing happened. For centuries this looked like simple feline eccentricity. In the last few years, researchers have worked out the chemistry, the brain pathway, and — most surprisingly — a plausible evolutionary reason the response exists at all. Here is what science actually knows about catnip, why a third of cats couldn't care less, and what to offer the cats that don't respond.
What Catnip Is
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a perennial herb in the mint family, native to Europe and Asia and now naturalized across much of the world. Its leaves and stems carry microscopic bulbs called trichomes that store the plant's essential oil. The magic ingredient in that oil is nepetalactone, an iridoid compound the plant most likely evolved as an insect deterrent. When a cat sniffs, paws, or chews the plant, the trichomes rupture and release nepetalactone into the air — and that is when the performance begins.
What a Catnip Reaction Looks Like
The classic response is remarkably consistent across cats that have it: sniffing and licking the material, head shaking, chin and cheek rubbing, and the signature head-over roll on the floor, often with drooling and a brief burst of playful, kitten-like energy. The episode typically lasts around five to fifteen minutes, after which the cat becomes temporarily "immune" — a refractory period of roughly an hour or more before the response can be triggered again.
Interestingly, the effect depends on how the catnip is consumed. Smelled, it acts as a stimulant and triggers the rolling-and-rubbing display. Eaten, it tends to have the opposite, mellowing effect, which is why some cats munch a little and then settle into a calm sprawl. Both reactions are normal.
The Opioid Connection: What Happens in the Brain
For decades, scientists knew nepetalactone activated the olfactory system and suspected the response was pleasurable, but the mechanism was fuzzy. A landmark study led by Reiko Uenoyama and Masao Miyazaki at Japan's Iwate University, published in Science Advances in January 2021, filled in the picture. Working with both catnip's nepetalactone and the closely related compound nepetalactol from silver vine, the team showed that exposure raises circulating levels of β-endorphin — one of the body's own opioids — in cats. Those endorphins in turn activate the μ-opioid system, the same reward pathway that opioids act on in humans. When the researchers blocked the opioid receptors with naloxone, the rubbing and rolling largely stopped.
In plain terms: catnip makes the cat's own brain release feel-good chemicals. The plant doesn't need to be absorbed into the bloodstream in any meaningful amount — the scent alone is enough to fire the circuit. That is also why the response is self-limiting and why cats don't develop the tolerance, dependence, or withdrawal that define true addiction.
Why Some Cats Don't Respond at All
If your cat sniffs the expensive catnip toy once and walks away, it is in large company. The catnip response is hereditary, a finding first reported by geneticist Neil Todd in the 1960s, and a substantial share of cats simply never develop it. In the largest modern behavioral study — Sebastiaan Bol and colleagues, published in BMC Veterinary Research in 2017, testing 100 domestic cats — about one in three cats showed no response to catnip.
Age matters too. Kittens younger than about three to six months typically don't react regardless of their genes; the response emerges as they mature. And the phenomenon isn't limited to house cats — big cats can be susceptible as well, with studies documenting responses to these plant compounds in species from lynx to jaguars, which tells us the trait is ancient in the cat family.
The Evolutionary Surprise: Built-In Bug Repellent
The strangest twist in catnip science is the answer to why such a response would evolve at all. The same 2021 Science Advances study demonstrated that nepetalactol is a potent mosquito repellent, and that when cats rub their faces and roll their bodies in the leaves, they transfer these iridoid compounds onto their fur. Cats whose heads were treated with the compounds attracted significantly fewer mosquitoes than untreated cats. In a 2022 follow-up in iScience, the same group showed that when cats lick and chew the leaves, the plant damage massively increases the amount of repellent iridoids released — the chewing isn't random, it makes the "insect repellent" work better.
The emerging picture is that the euphoric rubbing and rolling may be nature's way of getting cats to apply their own mosquito protection. An ambush predator that has to hold still, face-first, in vegetation benefits from anything that keeps biting insects off its head. Evolution appears to have wired the behavior to feel good so the cats would keep doing it.
Silver Vine: The Alternative Most Owners Have Never Tried
Because the response is genetic, no amount of premium catnip will win over a non-responder. But catnip is not the only plant that works. The 2017 Bol study also tested three alternatives long used in Asia: silver vine (Actinidia polygama), Tatarian honeysuckle wood, and valerian root. The results were striking:
- Silver vine triggered a response in almost 80% of cats — more than catnip itself — and worked in roughly 75% of the cats that ignored catnip.
- Tatarian honeysuckle and valerian root each worked in about half of cats, including roughly one in three catnip non-responders.
Silver vine, sold as a powder or as chew sticks, is widely available and generally considered safe for cats. If your cat is indifferent to catnip, one of these alternatives is well worth a try — enrichment matters, especially for indoor cats.
Is Catnip Safe?
Yes, for the overwhelming majority of cats. Catnip is non-toxic and non-addictive — the ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats and dogs, noting only that cats who eat a large amount may experience mild vomiting or diarrhea, which resolves on its own. There is no evidence of long-term harm from regular, moderate use. A few sensible guidelines:
- Offer it in moderation — a pinch of dried herb or a stuffed toy once every week or two keeps the response fresh.
- Supervise first exposures. A small minority of cats respond to catnip with overstimulation or rough play rather than mellow rolling; if yours gets swatty, offer it away from other pets and children.
- Skip concentrated essential oils. Whole dried plant material and toys are the safe formats; concentrated oils are far stronger than anything a cat would meet in nature.
- Store it airtight and dark. Nepetalactone degrades with light and air, which is why old catnip stops working.
Catnip can also be genuinely useful: sprinkled on a scratching post to redirect scratching, tucked into a carrier to build positive associations, or used as low-cost enrichment for an indoor cat's routine.
So the next time your cat dissolves into blissful rolling over a sprinkle of dried leaves, you're not just watching a quirky habit — you're watching an ancient, genetically inherited, opioid-driven behavior that may have helped the cat family fend off mosquitoes for millions of years.
