Your dog is flat out on the rug. The paws start paddling. A muffled woof escapes, the whiskers flicker, and the eyes dart back and forth beneath closed lids. Every owner who has watched this has thought the same thing: what are you chasing in there?

We can't ask a dog what it saw last night, and no experiment ever will. But sleep science has quietly assembled a strong circumstantial case — from brainstem anatomy, from EEG recordings in canine sleep labs, and from one famous rodent study that came about as close as anyone has to reading a dreaming brain.

Dogs Sleep in the Same Stages We Do

Researchers at the Family Dog Project at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest developed a non-invasive polysomnography method for dogs, recording brain activity, eye movement, heart rate and breathing from awake, unsedated family pets napping in a lab. The recordings show the same architecture found in humans: wakefulness, drowsiness, non-REM sleep, and REM sleep, with the transitions marked by the same EEG signatures.

That last stage is the one that matters. In humans, REM — rapid eye movement sleep — is when the most vivid, narrative dreaming occurs. Dogs enter it too, complete with the darting eyes the stage is named after and a burst of brain activity that looks strikingly like waking.

The proportions differ. Dogs run through much shorter sleep cycles than the roughly 90-minute human cycle, and they spend a smaller share of total sleep in REM — laboratory nap recordings generally put dogs somewhere in the range of 10 to 12 percent, against roughly 20 to 25 percent in adult humans. Dogs compensate the way cats do: by sleeping far more often, in shorter bouts, spread across the day and night.

The Study That Made the Case

The strongest evidence for animal dreaming doesn't come from dogs at all. In 2001, Kenway Louie and Matthew Wilson at MIT published a study in Neuron that has been cited ever since as the closest anyone has come to eavesdropping on a dream.

They implanted microelectrode arrays into the hippocampus of rats — the brain region that maps space and stores episodic memory — and recorded the firing of many individual neurons at once while the animals ran laps on a circular track for food. Each route produced a distinctive, time-ordered signature of neural firing.

Then they recorded the same rats asleep. During REM episodes, those signatures came back. Not as vague echoes, but as temporally structured replays running at roughly the same speed as the original run, sometimes stretching across minutes. The correspondence was tight enough that the researchers could work out where on the track a sleeping rat's brain was "running."

Rats are not dogs, but the hippocampus and brainstem sleep machinery are deeply conserved across mammals. If a rat brain replays its day in REM, there is no anatomical reason to think a dog's does not.

Why Your Dog Twitches Instead of Sprinting Across the Room

There's a small structure in the brainstem called the pons that, during REM sleep, actively paralyzes the body's major muscle groups. This atonia is a safety mechanism: it lets the motor cortex fire away without the body acting on the instructions.

We know exactly how important it is because of French neuroscientist Michel Jouvet, who in the 1960s lesioned the relevant pontine region in cats. The cats still entered REM sleep — but without the paralysis. They lifted their heads, swiveled them side to side, made chewing motions, pawed at empty air, and walked through complex sequences of behavior, all while sound asleep. Jouvet called it "oneiric behaviour," and it remains the animal model for REM sleep behavior disorder in humans.

The twitching you see in your dog is that paralysis leaking a little. Atonia suppresses the large muscles but not perfectly, so fragments of motor commands escape as paddling paws, flicking whiskers, soft woofs and muffled growls. The movement is a symptom of the dream, not the dream itself.

So What Are They Dreaming About?

Nobody can say for certain. What we can say is that dog sleep is doing memory work, and memory work uses the day's material.

A 2017 study in Scientific Reports by Anna Kis and colleagues taught dogs new commands, then recorded a three-hour nap. Performance improved after sleep compared with the pre-sleep baseline, and the size of the improvement correlated with specific EEG features — REM delta and beta activity, and the density of sleep spindles during non-REM. The dogs' brains were consolidating what they'd learned, and the consolidation showed up in the sleep recording.

Related work from the same group found that selectively disrupting REM sleep, as opposed to non-REM, specifically impaired how dogs processed human emotional expressions afterward. REM in dogs appears to be doing something socially specific — sorting the day's interactions with us.

Put those pieces together and the reasonable inference is that a dog's dreams are made of dog things: the walk, the smells along the fence line, the other dog at the park, the sound of your car in the driveway. Familiar, ordinary, and mostly about you.

Dreaming or a Seizure? How to Tell

This is the one thing worth knowing precisely, because the two can look similar at a glance and the stakes are very different. The American Kennel Club highlights several reliable distinctions.

A seizure lasting more than five minutes, or more than one seizure in 24 hours, is an emergency — go to a veterinarian immediately. Anything you suspect might have been a seizure, even a brief one, is worth a call to your vet. Filming the episode on your phone is genuinely useful; it's often the single most helpful thing you can bring to the appointment.

Should You Wake a Dreaming Dog?

No — let sleeping dogs lie, quite literally. A dog startled awake mid-REM is disoriented for a few seconds and may snap reflexively before recognizing you. It isn't aggression, it's a startle response, and it's a common cause of bites to well-meaning owners and especially to children.

If a dream looks distressing and you feel you have to intervene, say the dog's name softly from a distance rather than touching them. Let them surface on their own.

Give Them Something Good to Dream About

Sleep quality and daytime experience feed each other. Dogs consolidate what they learn and what they feel, which is a decent argument for making sure there's something worth consolidating: a proper walk, some sniffing time, a training session, real social contact. Then a quiet, dark, predictable place to sleep it off, undisturbed.
